Module 1 Activity Research

Yawen Qiao

This project provided us with an introductory understanding of physical computing. During classroom lectures, we learned Arduino technology and how to integrate it with Protopie. We also calculated relevant information using a sensor. In this context, Protopie represents the input interface—the design—while Arduino and the sensor serve as the information carriers. After mastering these technologies, I aim to create a product related to 3D projection. I envision my product not only presenting users with vibrant visuals and engaging content but also enabling interactive participation that elicits emotional or physical feedback.

Project 1

Module 1

This week we explored the principles behind how Arduino operates. We also experimented with connecting Arduino to a computer and installing LED lights. Additionally, we learned about connectors that allow two wires to be connected in opposite directions. We also studied the functions of various sensors.

Activity 1

Attempt to connect the Arduino to the computer and successfully make the LED light up and blink. <a href='https://www.youtube.com/embed/tgbNymZ7vqY' target='_blank'><p>Project Video Link</p></a> After testing the connection between the Arduino and the computer, the small light turned on. <div class='container'><iframe class='responsive-iframe' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/tgbNymZ7vqY'></iframe></div> This is the code used when connecting to Arduino. It enables the program that lights up the small lamp to function properly. This is the small light added after connecting the machine. It allows the light to illuminate even when the two wires are not touching each other, thereby expanding the circuit connection range. This is a relatively complex schematic diagram of an Arduino circuit board demonstrated in class. You may encounter more of these in the future.

WGSN Consumer Trend Research

This is my exploration and research into the fundamentals of WGSN. Within the themes, I selected indoor cultivation technology and empathetic AI companions as my research focus. Both subjects align with my personal interests. I believe these two themes share a common goal: to provide emotional and physical support for modern humans. This is precisely what I aspire my product to achieve. Therefore, I chose these two themes as my research direction.

This is my research on empathetic AI companions. Studies indicate that empathetic artificial intelligence companions are designed to transcend basic functionality, offering emotional intelligence support while providing companionship and mental health assistance. This is my research on autonomous indoor gardens. The study demonstrates that autonomous indoor gardens integrate artificial intelligence, ecology, and design. They create living systems that promote family well-being and independence. This is my summary of the previous two sections.

WGSN Personas Research

This section details my research on personas for different themes. I believe the persona associated with empathetic AI companions aligns with Independents. The persona linked to autonomous indoor gardens is The Energetic.

This is my understanding and exploration of New Independent. This is my understanding and exploration of The Energisers. This is my summary based on four aspects: Behaviors, Buying, Priorities, and Actions.

HMI Research

This is a summary of the HMI and HMW developed for the persona. It includes potential challenges they may encounter and reflections on the subject matter. What might they face? What are their thoughts? And so on. This is also a crucial aspect of research that cannot be overlooked. Because these insights directly reveal potential issues that may arise during the product design process.

These are the findings for The Independents, along with some insights drawn from their core characteristics. These are the findings for The Energizers, along with some insights drawn from their core characteristics. Additional responses to questions integrated with the theme.

Project Path

This is my process for the entire project. From the very beginning, I drew inspiration from a video I found online, which motivated me to create a related product. Later, I began researching 3D projection themes, gathering data to support my concept. Finally, through peer feedback and my own reflections, I arrived at my current design philosophy.

This is my source of inspiration. At first, I found all of these incredibly beautiful, but later I came to understand that 3D projection is also deeply connected to human emotions.
This is the data I found related to the development of 3D projection. It shows consistent annual growth. This is the conclusion I reached after completing the event.

Project 1 Concept

Project 1 Concept

For this project, I aim to design products utilizing 3D projection technology. I view this as an artistic endeavor, but I don't want it to merely be aesthetically pleasing or for passive appreciation. I want it to offer emotional support or display content that people can personally define and give meaning to. I hope people can achieve this goal through interaction or by designing their own content. This photo, which I found on Facebook, aligns closely with my vision. I'll include a link in the photo's detailed description for reference. For this project, I plan to realize my vision through painting or interactive content projected in 3D. Initially, I hadn't considered making it interactive, as I viewed projection as a relatively static medium for displaying art. However, after learning more and receiving feedback, I changed my perspective. I want my product to carry deeper meaning beyond merely showcasing artwork. I will continue exploring 3D projection technologies to achieve my envisioned goals. Regarding how the product will be presented to people: For instance, I envision creating a painting and rendering it as a blurred, abstract form rather than a concrete image. I would then enable people to interact with it to achieve an interactive effect. This is currently just a concept, and I will continue exploring it in the future.

This is a post about the design direction I'm aiming for.
